Phil Abbott

Curator of Indigenous Studies

Phil is a PhD Candidate in Indigenous Studies at Trent University. The dominant narratives of history taught in Canadian schools render both settler colonization and Indigenous presence invisible. This leads to distorted perceptions of our past and of the current relationship between non-Indigenous Canadians and Indigenous nations in Canada. Key to improving this relationship are changes to the grade school curriculum to portray more complex narratives of history including a recognition of settler colonization. Phil’s research focuses on how to bring these counter narratives of history to the forefront. Phil is working closely with our student ambassadors to establish the key learning outcomes that will establish the foundation for our Schools for Social Justice education program.

Donald Chrétien

Chief Creative Officer

Donald is a First Nations Fine Artist with over thirty years of experience whose works are exhibited throughout North America. His Vancouver Olympics installation piece, titled Ngashi Nijii Bineshiinh, or Mother, Friend, Small Bird, is on permanent display in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum. An Ontario Arts Council recipient of the Aboriginal Artists in School program, Donald’s passion for education took root when he created artwork for “Little Butterfly Girl,” an educational initiative focused on Indian Residential Schools. His paintings Earth Mother and Sky Woman are the basis of Grey Roots Museum’s Tales from the Wigwam, teaching Indigenous Knowledge for grades one to eight. In addition to exploring his Ojibwe heritage through traditional woodland style paintings, Donald provides artistic and cultural guidance for K12 Global’s Indigenous projects.

Marilyn Church – BA, B.Ed., TESL

Curriculum Consultant

Marilyn has long focussed on making her community a place where social justice and positive change flourish. She has worked on Main Street Revitalization projects and the preservation of her town’s historic neighbourhood, as well as food security in York Region. She spearheaded the successful establishment of the Newmarket Main Street Farmers’ Market. In her Quaker faith community, she has fulfilled many roles, both administrative and outreach focussed. She is a recipient of the Arts & Entertainment National Award for Curriculum Development and now teaches English as a Second Language to adults, both in-class and online. She believes passionately that everyone has the capacity to learn, and it is the teacher who must find the key for each student to open their personal gates of knowledge. Marilyn is applying her myriad pedagogical skills and deep passion for education to the K12 Global project.

Julie Cochrane

Executive Director

Julie is a social entrepreneur inspired to effect positive societal change. She understands that one of the keys to addressing today’s social justice issues is through education and universal access to practical and effective teaching materials. To that end she has assembled a dedicated team of respected educators, social activists and content developers to create learning resources for grade school teachers to help them guide critical thinking, understanding and compassion in their students. Julie’s commitment to her local community is expressed in her volunteer roles as President of the Board of Directors for the Newmarket Group of Artists; Marketing Director for Dragonfly, supporting women of York Region after Breast Cancer; and Marketing Director for Petbucks, a not-for-profit that helps save the lives of the millions of healthy, homeless pets. Julie’s earlier education program, Canada’s School for a Living Planet, collaborated with the World Wildlife Federation to bring curriculum-based learning outcomes for a healthier planet to over 4 million students.

Cort Egan

Communications Collaborator

Holding a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Communication Design from the University of Waterloo and currently completing a Master of Leadership from the University of Guelph, Cort is a self-described ethical communicator. With over thirty years of experience in communications, marketing, sales and promotions in a variety of public and private sector organizations, Cort was drawn to the K12 Global education program because he believes that the real power of communication is its ability to reframe our world in a more positive way. K12 Global and its Schools for Social Justice align with Cort’s values and personal mission; he is attempting to help articulate K 12 Global’s message in a meaningful way.

Jacqueline Eldridge

Chief Education Officer

Jacqueline Eldridge is deeply committed to ensuring teachers have everything they need to help students succeed. Jacqueline’s impressive career as an educator has spanned three decades. Since 1997, she has been sharing her expertise with present and future teachers, both as a professor of education and as an author and speaker. Jacqueline earned her Doctor of Education in 1996 from the University of Toronto; her Master’s at Niagara University in 1990; her Bachelor of Education from the Ontario Teacher Education College in 1979; and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario in 1978. Jacqueline is engaging directly with our student ambassadors to assist K12 Global in developing appropriate, curriculum-based learning outcomes.

Paul Fleming

Digital Activist

Paul has almost 20 years of interactive experience, from award-winning art direction to leading creative teams at some of Toronto’s most innovative agencies. A firm believer in the continued integration of traditional, digital and social campaigns, he consistently delivers highly original, first-rate concepts that engage, empower and mobilize. Paul endeavours to use his considerable skill to effect positive change and to help lead the next generation through socially responsible education programs.

Norah Fountain

Head Content Developer

Norah is a hard-working advocate for equal access to education and technology, with a particular interest in education for special populations. As an elected School Trustee, Norah worked with her school board’s Aboriginal Education Committee to better meet the needs of First Nation, Inuit and Metis students. She was also a regional delegate with the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, and advocated for additional resources and supports for special education and has lobbied the federal finance minister directly as part of the Don’t Tax Our Schools effort. Norah is helping to guide K12 Global in developing compelling and effective educational content that will meet provincial guidelines around student learning outcomes.

Martha Nandorphy

Education Advisor

Martha Nandorfy is a professor of English at the University of Guelph whose research focuses on contemporary global issues such as human and environmental rights as interpreted through story. Along with Daniel Fischlin, she co-authored a trilogy on the intersections between rights and storytelling titled, Eduardo Galeano: Through the Looking Glass (2001), The Concise Guide to Global Human Rights (2007), and The Community of Rights/The Rights of Community (2012). She has published extensively on storytelling and communitarian politics in such diverse contexts as the Zapatista Movement in Chiapas and the queer utopianism of filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Her current research focuses on literary journalism and indigenous storytelling as alternative sources of knowledge and inspiration. Martha’s extraordinary insights around the power of story to enhance understanding and broaden perception is invaluable in the development of K12 Global curriculum development.

Tony Duggan-Smith

Creative Thinker, and Artisan

Plucked from a traditional British Art College by a celebrated international artist and dropped on Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the early 1970s, Tony quickly became known for the ‘snap, crackle, pop’ of his creative energy. That same energy served him well with cult favourites, Pukka Orchestra, a brilliant band from Toronto in the early 1980’s described by the Globe and Mail as a ‘Canadian Treasure.’ The band’s strong social commentary was a big factor in their popularity and they weren’t afraid to address any issues, whether police brutality (Cherry Beach Express) or suicide (Power). Known as a gifted set-designer in film and television, he has also been building and restoring world class guitars throughout his adult life. He and six other luthiers who started out together in Toronto, are the core of the Group of Seven Guitar Project with the McMichael Gallery, slated for Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. Tony is using his creativity and singular vision to help keep K12 Global innovative in its approach to educational programming.

Lucy La Grassa, PhD

Senior Vice-President, Whalefeather Inc.

Lucy is passionate about education, continuous learning and self-development for children and adults. She is a Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) who specializes in issues management, stakeholder engagement and communications for the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Lucy’s most noteworthy business accomplishment is the founding of the acclaimed program, The Prism Awards, which was run through schools, libraries and associations across Canada from 1990-2002. This mentor-based program trained young children between the ages of 7-14 to become professional writers with over 200,000 books published by The Kids Netword. Lucy is currently the Senior Vice-President of Whalefeather Inc. which works with indigenous peoples, companies and communities to help build sustainable food, education and telecommunications businesses. Whalefeather has partnered with K-12 Global to transform the works of award-wining indigenous author, Thomas King, into a linked-curriculum program that is free to download by teachers across North America. Lucy’s PhD is in organizational development and transformational education.

Kim Lechner

SVP, Corporate Controller, Ahold USA

Kim’s financial expertise is equalled only by her humanitarianism. With Chartered Professional Accountancy designations that are recognized in Canada and the United States, Kim has an impressive portfolio of success on both sides of the border. She is a visionary, strategist, tactician and strong negotiator with a reputation for introducing positive and profitable change into organizations, without losing sight of the human element. Her accomplishments in business are myriad and they are all the more remarkable for their persistent commitment to integrity and compassion. These values prompted Kim to establish the not-for-profit organization, PETBUCKs, a fundraising engine that effectively uses social networking tools to connect animal welfare organizations in order to save the lives of millions of homeless pets. She is an excellent communicator, coach, mentor and creative problem-solver; Kim is using her impressive skill-set to help guide the future direction of K12 Global.

John Taylor

Regional Councillor, Newmarket

John Taylor serves on York Region Council representing the Town of Newmarket. He is Chair of the Region’s Community and Health Services Committee and Co-Chair of the Human Services Planning Board. He also sits on several Town of Newmarket committees including the Economic Development Advisory Committee. John was previously an advisor to the Minister of Community and Social Services at Queen’s Park. While attending Trent University, The University of Toronto, and The University of British Columbia, John earned Bachelor Degrees in English and Education, a Master’s Degree in Canadian Studies, and a Ph.D. in Education. In the 1990s, John worked as an instructor and research assistant at the University of British Columbia while he completed his doctorate which focused on teacher training. From 1990 – 1994, he was a teacher in the Peguis First Nations community in Manitoba. John wrote about his experiences in the publication, “First Nations Education in Canada: The Circle Unfolds.” John has a unique lens on today’s education landscape and is assisting K12 Global in achieving its goals.

Personally Identifiable Information
In order to download classroom lessons and activities you are required to register within our application (web site). This process asks for various personally identifiable information including your, mailing and email address. This information is used to create your K12 profile, verify your identity next time you come to our site. You will receive email notices, updates and offers from K12 or our sponsorship partners only if you specifically opted-in to receive them at registration. If you choose in the future not to receive these emails, each email message includes the ability to opt-out from future correspondence.

Aggregate Web Site Data
We gather certain generic information with respect to your use of our web sites. This includes the number of unique visitors, the frequency with which they visit, and the areas on the web site that they favor. This data is used aggregate (on a collective basis), in summary form, rather than on an individual basis.
